Buying a bicycle via Salary Sacrifice (The Bike-to-Work Scheme)

cyclingsuperh1

Within the Government’s Green Transport Plan, there is a tax exemption which allows employers to provide bicycles and accessories to employees as a tax-free benefit, i.e. via Salary Sacrifice.

An employer buys the bikes and any safety accessories at full retail price. The balance is recovered from a reduction in the employee’s gross salary over a period of months. Technically speaking, the scheme works with employees actually hiring the bicycles from the employer, then buying them at the end of the salary sacrifice period for what is called a ‘Fair Market Value Payment’.

We use a company called cyclescheme.co.uk to manage our scheme and the scheme is open to permanent employees* who are paid via Curtis Brown’s payroll system**.
